This mini photographic project explores the distinctive colours of houses in Reykjavík, where bright reds, blues, yellows, and greens animate the urban landscape. These colours are not random; they have both practical and cultural roots. Traditionally, brightly coloured paint was used to protect corrugated iron buildings from harsh weather, while also making homes more visible and welcoming during long, dark winters. Over time, this necessity evolved into a visual identity, reflecting individuality within a shared architectural style. The project captures how colour shapes Reykjavík’s character, transforming functional buildings into expressions of warmth, resilience, and creativity in Iceland’s challenging environment.
